Travel

Located in northern New Mexico, Santa Fe is served by the Santa Fe Regional Airport (SAF) and the Albuquerque International Sunport (ABQ). The Santa Fe Regional Airport is just 10 miles southwest of downtown and offers daily direct flights from Denver, Dallas, and Phoenix on American and United Airlines.

The Albuquerque International Sunport is 60 miles away. To get from the Albuquerque airport to Santa Fe, you can either rent a car or use the Groome Transportation Albuquerque to Santa Fe shuttle service. Visit groometransportation.com/santa-fe/ for more information including rates.

We strongly recommend travel insurance that covers the costs of emergency medical, trip cancellation/interruption, and cancel for any reason.

Excursions

There is so much to do in Santa Fe and the surrounding areas that we highly recommend adding a night or two outside of the conference dates to your stay. Many local Santa Fe experiences are an easy walk or complimentary shuttle ride from the hotel. These include (but are certainly not limited to):

  • The historic Santa Fe Plaza
  • The Georgia O’Keeffe Museum
  • Institute of American Indian Arts (IAIA) Museum of Contemporary Native Arts
  • The Loretto Chapel
  • Canyon Road Art Galleries
  • Museum Hill
  • The Railyard including the SITE Santa Fe Museum and New Mexico Museum of Art-Vladem Contemporary
We also invite you to enhance your visit to New Mexico further by joining one or more tours. For this conference, we have partnered with Great Southwest Adventures, a locally owned and operated tour company with professional guides who have been sharing their expertise and love of the region with travelers for over twenty years. Great Southwest Adventures supports regional economic development and provides culturally and ecologically sensitive outings.

A tour excursion with an expert guide will provide insights into the origins of Santa Fe’s architecture, art, food and culture. By visiting ancestral and contemporary native communities, you’ll see firsthand the influences of the diverse landscapes and cultures on today’s vibrant art community. You can also learn about the Spanish influence as well as later settlers from a variety of backgrounds who’ve shaped the history of New Mexico—including trappers, gold seekers, explorers, artists, tuberculosis patients, physicists, women who escaped the rigidity of eastern culture and other seekers of a different lifestyle. Tour guides will also dive into the natural history of the region and its rich geologic past of uplifts and volcanic eruptions, inland seas, and dinosaur filled swamps, which have created the natural beauty that is integral to New Mexico’s identity as the “Land of Enchantment.”

Half-day Options

If you choose to arrive the Tuesday evening before the conference begins or stay through the Sunday evening after the conference is over, there is time on Wednesday morning, November 5, or Sunday afternoon, November 9, to go on a half-day tour. Here are some suggestions:

BANDELIER CLIFF DWELLINGS

(5 hours)
Price includes guide, transportation, National Park permit and entrance fees, water, and snacks.

Image

Great Southwest Adventures’ Bandelier Cliff Dwellings trip is by far the best and most fun outing for getting a wonderful taste of the interesting landscapes and rich cultural and natural history of northern New Mexico.

Driving from Santa Fe we descend a bit in elevation and cross the Rio Grande valley with excellent views of the southern end of the Rocky Mountains. We then travel up the side of a huge Super Volcano, the Jemez Mountains, where we visit Bandelier National Monument, a site set aside to protect the cliff dwellings carved into volcanic ash, once home to the ancestors of contemporary Pueblo Indians who continue to live throughout the region. Guides will share some information along the way about the natural and cultural history and sights we are seeing.

Once at Bandelier, we’ll take a guided walk in a beautiful canyon to visit the cliff dwellings, remnants of an early village and petroglyphs (rock art carvings). There are options for those who would like to climb ladders to experience the inside of a cliff dwelling. There are options for shorter or longer walks. There will also be time to visit the National Park Service visitor center and museum which are housed in historic buildings constructed by the Civilian Conservation Corps.

GEORGIA O’KEEFFE’S RED ROCK COUNTRY: CHASING BEAUTY

(Approximately 5–6 hours)
Price includes guide, transportation, Ghost Ranch entrance fees, water, and snacks.

This is a spectacular trip for natural scenery, truly a trip into the essence of the American Southwest where we immerse in the colorful landscapes that captivated artist Georgia O’Keeffe’s heart and palate for much of her life.

We travel up the Chama River Valley to Abiquiu, a Spanish/Indian settlement where O’Keeffe had her winter home. We’ll then follow the cottonwood-lined Chama River to Ghost Ranch where she spent her summers painting the yellow and red cliffs that tower over the colored sands of the valley below. We’ll spend a little time poking around the Ghost Ranch to learn about the anthropology and paleontology of the area and to soak up plenty of opportunities for photography and exploration.

OPTION for a picnic lunch or to stop in Abiquiu for lunch.

OPTION to include an extension to privately-owned Plaza Blanca (the White Place), a geologic wonderland that O’Keeffe painted and Ansel Adams photographed—surreal beauty. Great Southwest Adventures has special permission to visit this site. Price would include an additional $25 per person to pay entry fee to landowners.

NEW MEXICO SAMPLER

(4 hours)

Image

Enjoy a genuine taste of the Spanish and Pueblo cultures of New Mexico and the amazing landscapes north of Santa Fe.

We'll visit the Spanish village of Chimayo with its legendary church, local arts, and beautiful setting. We’ll travel across the Rio Grande and discuss the Pueblo culture and see some cliff dwellings. From a high cliff we'll overlook breathtaking views of the region.

It's a perfect loop.

Full-day Options

If you choose to stay even longer and want to explore further afield, Great Southwest Adventures also offers full-day tour options such as:

TAOS

(Approximately 8 hours)

A day trip to Taos offers a vivid experience of the Southwest; stunning scenery, rich artistic traditions, and Taos Pueblo; the oldest inhabited building in the United States. The Taos tour is as much about the journey as about the actual visit to the town of Taos and the Taos Indian Pueblo.

We’ll travel through the Sangre de Cristo Mountains on the scenic “High Road” with breathtaking views as we climb to over 9,000 feet in elevation. Picturesque villages dot our route where long time settlers and more recently arrived artists reside in the beauty of the landscape. We’ll make a brief visit to the Sanctuario de Chimayo, a pilgrimage site for those who seek healing.

Once in Taos, guests will have lunch downtown on your own, and some time to visit Taos’ famous galleries. Taos is the original center of New Mexico’s art world. We’ll proceed to Taos Pueblo to visit a Pueblo Indian village that has stood largely unchanged since prehistoric times and has been designated a UNESCO site. A native guide will provide a walking tour of the village. Our return journey is equally scenic as we travel back to Santa Fe via the Rio Grande Gorge and follow the river through the Espanola Valley.

THE JEMEZ SUPER VOLCANO

(7 hours)

Image

Just west of Santa Fe lies a huge slumbering volcano that created a stunning landscape after its last eruption a million years ago. Crowned by a vast caldera (crater) and beautiful mesas formed with sculpted ash that today hold beautiful ruins of early Pueblo culture, and the legacy of the Manhattan Project at Los Alamos.

Join us for a day of exploring the Jemez Mountains with visits to:

All of these locations are managed by the National Park Service. Tours will include an amazing spread of history and scenery, great food, and visiting one of the most significant and beautiful places in the American West.
